One of the oldest schools located a few steps from the popular grounds of Shivaji Park, where many a budding cricketer's career started, Balmohan Vidyamandir is a private, self-financed school under the management of the BMVM Trust.

Overview

Balmohan Vidyamandir

Established in 1940, Balmohan Vidyamandir is the most well-known school in the localities of Dadar-Shivaji Park. It is a co-ed educational institute that has two sections vis-à-vis the medium of instruction, namely Marathi and English, and, as per the age group, there are three sections, namely, pre-primary, primary and secondary sections. All students study as per the curriculum of the State Board and the Class 10 students appear for the Secondary School Certificate (S.S.C.) exams.

The pre-primary section for toddlers is in the same locality of Shivaji Park, opposite the Nana-Nani park, on the ground floor of a residential building, while the primary to secondary sections from Class 1 up to Class 10 is located in its own independent building. Students of the secondary section get education and vocational guidance and counselling. Art and craft activities, cultural programs and celebration of national days are thoroughly enjoyed by one and all.

Separate Committees have been set up for administrative purposes, such as one for the overall management and development of the school, another to oversee the school bus transport service, a third for the mid-day meal scheme, etc. There is also an active Parent-Teacher Association.

Some interesting features


The school's logo has a gold shield with the Saraswati Yantra on it, which represents the Goddess of Knowledge and Learning. 
The Goddess with her musical instrument, the Veena, seated on her mount, a peacock, is prominently placed above the main entrance of the school building of Balmohan Vidyamandir.

This is one of the few schools in the city which still has the old-fashioned school bell and one that is well-maintained and used.

With the public grounds of Shivaji Park located right around the corner, children of the primary classes are often taken there for general play time and P.T. exercises. So if you hear the excited squeals and laughter of kids, you'll know for sure that Balmohan Vidyamandir children are having loads of fun! 

Infrastructure and facilities

The three-storeyed school building of Balmohan Vidyamandir in Mumbai houses over a dozen classrooms, science labs for physics, chemistry and biology, and a library with a reading room. There are labs as well for Language, Computers, Home Science and ones for Maths, Social Science and pre-vocational studies for students of Class 9 and 10. There is a co-curricular/activity room, too, and an auditorium with audio-visual facilities, including an LCD projector. Sports and games' kits are provided for cricket, badminton, table tennis, etc. and there are instruments for music lessons. 

For safety purposes, there are fire extinguishers installed at strategic places within the school building and security guards ensure visitors cannot enter the premises without permission. Every visitor is required to have his/her name entered in the register at the entrance.

Admissions

Students from low-income families can apply for the 17 seats available under the RTE quota admission. The schedule for admissions to Balmohan Vidyamandir, Mumbai is generally displayed on a large board at the entrance of the school. Parents can obtain the admission form from the school office on the ground floor and submit it within the time-frame given.

The age criteria is as follows to the entry level of Class 1-

  • Minimum Age: 5 years, 11 months, 15 days.
  • Maximum Age: 7 years, 2 months, 29 days.
