University of Portsmouth - British Council Scholarships for English Language Teachers in India 2025

The University of Portsmouth, England is offering scholarships in collaboration with the British Council to students from India to pursue an MA Applied Linguistics and TESOL course [TESOL is the acronym for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages]. Seven scholarships are available for those who are permanent residents of India and are not receiving financial support or funding towards a study programme in the UK from any other source. Applicants should also not have previously studied at the degree level or higher in the UK or lived recently in the UK (that is, in the last three years).

 Interested students should submit their applications by 9th May 2025. 

Course Components

  1. Dissertation Project (60 credits)
  2. Second Language Acquisition (30 credits)
  3. Using Language Corpora for Teaching and Research (30 credits)
  4. Professional Portfolio (30 credits)
  5. Theory and Practice of TESOL (30 credits)
Scholarship Highlights
  • The Tuition Cost for the 2-year Postgraduate study (Distance Learning) will be covered by the scholarship
  • The scholarship includes a fully funded 2-week Continuing Professional Development residential programme in Portsmouth at the end of the first year, including return flights and UK airport transfers (Note- the accommodation fees are not included)
  • A stipend for expenses will be given
  • IELTS exam fees will be reimbursed for successful candidates
  • Visa, insurance and NHS charges will be covered

Eligibility Requirements
1. Nationality: You should be a passport holder and a permanent resident of India

2. Academic Qualification: You should have an undergraduate degree that will enable you to gain entry to one of the pre-selected postgraduate programmes at a UK university. 

3. Experience: Initial teacher training and a minimum of three months of relevant teaching experience (the experience should be full-time).

4. English Language ProficiencyEnglish language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 6.5 (or equivalent) with no component score below 6.5.

5. Financial Support: You should Demonstrate the case for financial support/socio-economic need through a written statement.

  •  A copy of your degree certificate
  •  A copy of your English language certificate. 
  •  A completed personal statement using the template provided on the official website.
